Search Tips for Works List Lookup
The Works List identifies works included in this Settlement. Anthropic downloaded approximately 7 million files from LibGen and PiLiMi. As part of the lawsuit, Anthropic produced those 7 million files to Plaintiffs’ attorneys. Plaintiffs’ attorneys used those 7 million files to create a “Works List” of all works that are part of the Class. Additional information regarding how the Works List was created, and why Works may or may not be included, can be found on the FAQ page beginning at FAQ 49.
If your work is included, you may be eligible to File a Claim. If your search results in a large number of Works, you may reach out to BulkClaimFiling@AnthropicCopyrightSettlement.com for assistance in reviewing your works and filing a claim.
For additional tips regarding how to search, please see below:
ISBN/ASIN: Search for only one ISBN or ASIN at a time.
Title: Search for the full book title. If you are unable to find the book, remove any leading articles (i.e. “The”).
Author: Search for the full author name. Search for only one author name at a time.
Publisher: Search for the full publisher name. Search for only one publisher at a time.
What do the columns on the works list lookup mean?
We strongly encourage all possible claimants—i.e. all possible legal and/or beneficial owners—of a given work to file a claim regardless of which column their information appears in. Below we provide a short explanation of the meaning/sources of the different columns. For more information, on how the works list was created, please see FAQ 7, and FAQs 49-52.
ISBN(s)/ASIN(s)
These include the International Standard Book Number(s) (“ISBN(s)”) and/or Amazon Standard Identification Number(s) (“ASIN(s)”) which we were able to identify (generally from the raw text of the files downloaded by Anthropic, the metadata from the LibGen and/or PiLiMi files, or any ISBN(s) listed on the official copyright registration).
- ISBNs are either 10 or, more commonly, 13 digits. A given ISBN identifies a specific edition and format of a book.
- Note: there may be other ISBNs for your book which are not listed as they did not correspond to the specific edition and/or format of the file in question and/or were not listed on the copyright registration. That generally should not impact your rights to claim for a given work if you are otherwise a legal or beneficial owner of the work under the settlement.
- ASINs are 10 characters. By design, all 10-digit ISBNs are also valid ASINs. However, unlike ISBNs, ASINs may also start with letters, most commonly “B.”
Copyright-Registered Title
Copyright-Registered Author(s)
Copyright-Registered Claimant(s)
- In general, each of these columns—“Copyright-Registered Title,” “Copyright-Registered Author(s),” and “Copyright-Registered Claimant(s)”—was sourced from the information listed on publicly available records of the United States Copyright Office associated with the “Copyright Registration Number.” We strongly encourage all possible claimants of a given work to file regardless of which column their information appears in.
- For materials registered after 1978 (including renewal registration), they can be viewed at https://publicrecords.copyright.gov/.
- For materials registered before 1978, they can be viewed either at https://www.copyright.gov/vcc/ or https://archive.org/details/copyrightrecords?tab=collection, though searching is more difficult.
Identified Publisher(s)
Identified Title
Identified Author(s)
- In general, each of these columns—“Identified Publisher(s),” “Identified Title,” and “Identified Author(s)”—was sourced from publicly available databases of ISBN information, primarily Bowker Books Data and/or ISBNdb. Such databases are publishing industry-standard tools for compiling, tracking, and reporting publisher, title, and author information on a per-ISBN basis. The information in these columns was also supplemented with manual review where possible.
- Occasionally the information in these columns may differ from what is listed on the “Copyright-Registered” columns because of differences in a given edition or format of a work (e.g. a later edition of a textbook may have additional authors) or disagreement between the records. We strongly encourage all possible claimants of a given work to file regardless of which column their information appears in.
Copyright Registration Number
- This is the Copyright Registration Number for the work which was identified in the official records of the United States Copyright Office.
Education Work
- This column identifies whether a work is an “Education Work” for purposes of the settlement and claims process. Education Works are works published by education publishers. Education publishers specialize in creating and publishing works, including but not limited to textbooks, for the instruction of students and professionals, which are distributed for and through educational and professional markets. Please see FAQs 21-27 for more information.
